North Carolina State Representative Gregory F. Murphy has criticized President Biden's student loan relief measures, arguing that they undermine hard-working Americans, particularly those who have fulfilled their debt obligations. He further characterized the plan as a "vote-buying scheme" and expressed concern that it might encourage colleges to continue non-educational programs.

"President Biden's student loan bailout is a slap in the face to hard-working Americans, especially those who worked to pay off their debts," said F. Murphy, according to X. "Another ‘vote buying scheme' to win reelection. His 'plan' incentivizes colleges to continue programs not related to education and subsequently raising tuition to pay for them. This illegal scheme overwhelmingly helps the wealthy."

President Biden intends to alleviate student debt under the Higher Education Act, proposing measures such as canceling up to $20,000 in interest for borrowers and automatically eliminating debt for eligible borrowers under income-driven repayment plans. Furthermore, the plan includes provisions for canceling debt for borrowers facing financial hardship or those who previously enrolled in low-value programs. These actions are part of a broader effort by the Biden-Harris Administration, which includes the launch of the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, according to information provided by the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Loan Debt Relief webpage.

According to a press release by WhiteHouse.gov, nearly 3.9 million Americans have been approved for student debt relief through various actions taken by President Biden's Administration. Additionally, over four million borrowers now benefit from a $0 monthly payment under the SAVE Plan.

Representative Gregory F. Murphy, M.D., is currently serving his third term representing North Carolina’s Third Congressional District, which encompasses significant areas of Eastern North Carolina. He holds key positions on several committees including the House Ways and Means Committee, the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Committee on House Administration. Murphy also co-chairs the House GOP Doctors Caucus. A graduate with academic honors from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine, he is currently the only practicing surgeon among congressional members according to House.gov.
